 Attorneys collaborate with clients to prepare court cases, offer legal advice, promote safety planning and counseling, and provide additional support such as emergency financial assistance.

 Attorneys represent clients in protective orders, divorce, custody, and adoption cases. They guide clients through court, explaining outcomes and necessary next steps.

We understand the challenges that survivors of abuse face. Our staff attorney and paralegal teams provide legal representation in family law matters to victims of domestic violence in Broward County and West Palm Beach. 

Our No- or Low-Cost Services Include: ​

  

  • Legal representation for protective orders, divorce, child support, child custody and adoption
  • Safety planning through development of an individual Safety and Self-Sufficiency Plan that identifies different options and resources to address emotional, physical, financial and legal risks/concerns
  • Emergency referrals for food, shelter, medical care, counseling and other social-service needs
  • Financial assistance for emergency shelter, food, transportation and more
  • Educational support through funds for education and training for clients
  • Advocacy with police, prosecutors and the courts
  • Legal guidance about your rights under the Broward County Family Code and insight into how the family courts work
  • Criminal justice information about your rights and options regarding criminal law and guidance on how the criminal justice system operates
  • Victims' compensation assistance in completing Broward Crime Victims' Compensation Fund applications
  • Counseling services for individual and group counseling for the survivor and their children (Broward County).

Expanded Legal Services Program

While most of Destiny's Purpose clients qualify for traditional legal aid, our Expanded Legal Services Program serves victims who earn too much for legal aid but too little to afford quality, trauma-informed legal representation. Clients in this program help with court costs and fees but are not charged for representation. We believe no victim should be denied quality legal services due to inability to pay.

Eligibility Requirements

​

Clients must generally meet these criteria (please call to confirm eligibility):

  • Experienced a pattern of physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse by a partner in recent years, or has minor children physically/sexually abused by the intimate partner
  • For divorce filings: One party must have resided in Florida for six months AND in Broward or West Palm Beach County for the preceding three months. We serve residents of these counties regardless of citizenship status
  • Must know the respondent's location (home/work) for legal notification purposes
  • Protective orders are available regardless of income level.

Always have a plan to keep yourself safe. Domestic violence is about control—victims are often kept financially dependent on the abuser and isolated from family and friends. Leaving a domestic violence situation safely takes planning and preparation.

Safety Planning Steps:


  • Involve your children and rehearse safety procedures with them
  • Alert trusted people including school officials, family members, and friends
  • Gather important documents, financial resources, and essential personal items
  • Determine where you will stay once you leave
